Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Justice Aloy Nwankwo, has refuted a report published by THISDAY on Sunday, March 8, 2015, that he was on leave and out of the country to stall the moves by the state lawmakers to impeach Governor Martin Elechi.
A statement by the state judiciary said Justice Nwankwo’s annual leave begins in August or September of each year and could therefore not have embarked on leave at this time.
The statement was signed by Mr. Eugene Okafor, spokesman of the state judiciary.
“We wish to state that the said claims are false, tendencious and disparaging. For the avoidance of doubt, Justice Aloy Nwankwo has not proceeded on leave, he has not travelled out of Nigeria, and is actively at work in Abakaliki,” said the statement.
“As a judge, the Chief Judge is entitled to annual vacation which comes up in August/September every year,” continued Okafor, stressing that the chief judge was more embarrassed by the suggestion that the “imaginary leave” was politically-motivated.
He urged reporters to always cross-check their facts to avoid disparaging “respectable individuals and institutions.”
