2015 Elections: 'Nigeria's Peculiarities Inform Deployment of Soldiers'

A political group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, G-18 Initiative  said on Thursday that deployment of soldiers during elections was necessary in view of Nigeria's peculiarities.

The position of the group was expressed at a news briefing addressed by the National Coordinator, Prince Poroye Biyi Bill, during a meeting held at the PDP secretariat.
Bill said though some people may see the deployment of soldiers as inappropriate during elections, Nigeria's democracy should be run in line with the situation on ground.
He therefore called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work with the security agencies to ensure adequate security in the forthcoming elections in the country.
The coordinator said the growth in tension and unwarranted broadsides that characterised the campaigns is dangerous to Nigeria's democracy.
He noted that political campaigns in advance democracy is about issues and debate.
"Political contest is about the good of the system and show of the ability to deliver. It is not about insults and denigration of the exalted office of the president", he said.
He appealed to political parties involved to think of the tortuous road that the nation went through to realise the present democracy.
While commending President Goodluck Jonathan for appointing Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC Chairman, Billl said the feat achieved by the commission is commendable.
